unmerchantable product

I purchased a pair of shoes from this website. The cost of the shoes was $100. When I received the shoes, I took them out of the box and they smelled like paint. I received them about three months ago and they still smell like paint. They are completely unwearable. I emailed the company (juney.service@hotmail.com -- the first time I saw this email address was when I went to send an email asking for a refund) and asked for a refund. They told me that it would be too expensive for me to ship them back and would not give me a refund. The company suggested that I pay them 1/2 the price of the shoes $50) and they would send me new shoes.
I find this to be outrageous. Why should I pay any more than the $100 I paid for shoes that I am unable to wear. (They also suggested that I pay $50 for the new paid and sell the ones they sent me to someone else (for a profit). Again, this is outrageous. The shoes are unmerchantable.) I do not have any photos because the shoes look fine, but the smell of paint is so strong, I cannot even take them out of the box.
